Day Trip on the Fens
Sky is a spirit level set against our lives here, even
the wind pump and lightning tree swallowed by distance.
Who hasn’t longed for days stretched calm and plain to the horizon,
as though we rose out of peat and will dwindle in a rumour of fog?
What relief though to reach the dunes,
where land falls short
and contours billow from as little
as driftwood and grass.
